WAAGNER-BIRO GOLIATH BEAM BRIDGE IN Heiligenkreuz – SMALL SITE MEETS BIG SOLUTION
Facts and figures:
Place/Country: Heiligenkreuz, Austria
Rental period: 2026
Project type: Goliath Beam Bridge, Rental Bridge, Temporary Bridge
Client: Amt der NÖ Landesregierung
Description:
When the existing road bridge over the Sattelbach near Heiligenkreuz, Austria, required a temporary replacement, a reliable bridge solution had to be delivered within a tight schedule. Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems supplied a 21 m single-span Goliath Beam Bridge to maintain access during the works.
The project was commissioned by the Provincial Government of Lower Austria, Department of Roads. Located close to Heiligenkreuz Abbey in the Vienna Woods, the site required a solution that could be transported efficiently and installed with minimal assembly work on site.
The beam bridge consisted of four modules forming a 21 m span. The bridge was designed in accordance with the Eurocode requirements of EN 1991-2:2003+AC:2010, including Load Models LM1 and LM2.
Pre-assembled for efficient installation
A key feature of the project was the logistics concept. Instead of transporting individual bridge components and carrying out extensive assembly at the construction site, the bridge was pre-assembled at the Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems warehouse in Bruck an der Leitha.
The bridge was transported in two assembled rows, each 21 m long and 2.5 m wide. This approach significantly reduced the amount of assembly required on site. Once delivered as special transport, the pre-assembled bridge sections could be lifted directly into their final positions and connected transversely. This enabled a fast and efficient installation process while keeping on-site works to a minimum.
The bridge accommodates a 2.5% crossfall and a 2.7% longitudinal gradient, demonstrating the flexibility of the Waagner-Biro Goliath bridge system in adapting to the geometry and conditions of the site.
Reliable temporary access
Installation was completed on 13 May 2026, providing a robust temporary crossing for road traffic while the permanent bridge works could proceed.
This project demonstrates how the combination of a modular steel bridge system, pre-assembly and specialised transport can provide an efficient temporary bridge solution where rapid deployment, reliable structural performance and reduced on-site assembly time are essential.
