Keeping Miltach Moving – A Best-Practice in Temporary Bridges
Facts and Figures:
Place/Country: Miltach, Germany
Rental period: 2025
Project type: Goliath Beam Bridge, Rental Bridge
Client: Strabag AG Bayern Nord
Description:
Infrastructure projects demand solutions that are safe, robust, and efficient to install. The temporary diversion across the Klinglbach Creek on the B85 between Cham and Passau demonstrates how Waagner-Biro’s Goliath Beam Bridge delivers on all three.
When the existing bridge over Klinglbach Creek on Germany’s busy B85 route was declared unfit for traffic, the pressure was on to deliver a safe, temporary crossing to keep vehicles moving during reconstruction of the permanent structure. The solution came in the form of Waagner-Biro’s Goliath Beam Bridge — a modular system engineered for heavy-duty performance in demanding construction environments.
Installed in spring 2025 following Waagner-Biro’s successful bid in a 2024 tender, the temporary bridge enabled uninterrupted traffic flow throughout seven months of major works. With a 24-metre span and 7.5-metre-wide carriageway, it comfortably carried the loads of modern road traffic while meeting stringent Eurocode LM1 load and fatigue requirements.
What sets the Goliath system apart is its versatility. Standard modules of 7.5m, 10.5m, and 13.5m can be combined to create spans up to 40.5m, tailored precisely to project demands. On the B85, a 13.5m module was coupled with a 10.5m unit to achieve the required span. Three pre-assembled rows, each 2.5m wide, were lifted into place by crane and bolted together — a process that showcased both speed and precision in construction.
Designed with practicality in mind, each module features integrated lifting lugs for easy handling. The bridge arrived with a three-layer corrosion protection system, epoxy-coated deck, and H1-retention class guardrails, ensuring strength, safety, and durability. Minor on-site adjustments — typical of complex construction projects — were swiftly managed, and the installation was completed on schedule.
The B85 diversion stands as a model project: proof that the Waagner-Biro Goliath Beam Bridge offers continuity, safety, and efficiency during critical infrastructure upgrades. A best-practice solution under real-world conditions.
