Temporary Bridge Cochrane, Chile

Facts and Figures:

Place/Country: Cochrane, Coyhaique, Chile
Completion: 2022
Project type: Panel (Bailey-type) Bridge
Client: Constructora Conpax, MOP

Description:

In December 2021 Waagner-Biro delivered a 39.62m long and 4.20m wide modular bridge (Bailey type) to the little town of Cochrane to serve as temporary replacement bridge during reconstruction works. The bridge was designed for AASHTO HS20-44+38%. Both installation and disassembly were supervised by a Waagner-Biro site advisor.

Cochrane is located alongside the Carretera Austral and close to the Patagonia National Park in the Aysén Region of Chile.

Built end of July 2022, the bridge had provided access and remained in service for nearly 2 years until beginning of 2024 when Constructora Conpax successfully dismantled the bridge using a cantilever de-launch methodology. The bridge removal operation was completed in 50 working hours using a crew of only 7 men and a small backhoe digger provided by the client. The Waagner-Biro site advisor attended the site during the whole operation to provide technical advice and support to the client, making sure the bridge removal was carried out in accordance with the specifications provided by Waagner-Biro.

The dismantled parts were checked and handed over to the local office of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), so they can use the temporary bridge again when required in the region.
