Kendal Bridge Belize

Facts and Figures:

Place/Country: Kendal/Belize
Completion: 2012
Project type: Modular Bridge
Client: Ministry of Works Belize

Description:

In 2008 Tropical Storm Arthur destroyed the 90 m long road bridge across the Kendal River in Belize, following which the river was only crossable by a makeshift single lane bridge. In 2010 the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) provided funds to build a new bridge.

The project was carried out together with the British company Qualter, Hall & Co. The tendering authority was the Ministry of Works in Belize.

The scope of performances for Waagner-Biro included the design and engineering for the steel truss and also the supervision of the installation on site. For the technical planning of the 90 m long and 11.5m high, double-lane road bridge, Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems was using 3D software, to meet the extremely tight deadline of 3 months for the complete project duration.

Qualter, Hall & Co. was responsible for the manufacture and delivery of the bridge. In order to plan the assembly sequences optimally, the steel structure was assembled on a trial basis before galvanizing in full scale in the United Kingdom.

After five months of construction, assembly of the bridge on auxiliary pillars in the riverbed was successfully completed in May 2012. Waagner-Biro assisted the three-month installation with a supervisor on site.
