A temporary solution during the reconstruction of the Croncels bridge
In 2024, extensive works were carried out on the historic Pont du faubourg Croncels in Troyes, France. The existing bridge, dating back to 1874, had deteriorated over time and was scheduled for demolition and reconstruction.
To maintain an important local connection during the works, the City of Troyes and Troyes Champagne Métropole arranged for a temporary bridge to be installed in the Croncels district. The temporary crossing enabled vehicles and pedestrians to cross the railway lines safely while the new concrete bridge was being constructed.
A modular panel bridge with integrated pedestrian access
Waagner-Biro supplied a Bailey-type panel bridge with a nominal length of 27.43 m and a 3.15 m carriageway width.
The bridge was designed for light vehicles with a maximum permitted weight of 3.5 tonnes. In addition to the main carriageway, the structure featured a 1.5 m wide cantilever footwalk on one side, providing dedicated space for pedestrians.
Standard steel deck elements with a raised-pattern surface were used to provide a robust and practical crossing. The bridge also served as a route for cable services, with cable lines being carried across the temporary structure.
Efficient installation without launching equipment
Assembly was completed within a day. The bridge was lifted into position using two cranes. No launching equipment was required, allowing the installation to be carried out efficiently within the restricted urban environment.
One of Waagner-Biro’s early rental projects in France
The Troyes project was one of Waagner-Biro’s first rental projects in France. It was delivered in cooperation with the French partner company Tous Travaux Sarl, which acted as the contracting partner for the supply of the bridge components.
Installed as a temporary replacement bridge for approximately eight months, the modular structure provided a reliable crossing during the demolition of the existing bridge and the construction of its replacement.
The project demonstrated the flexibility of Waagner-Biro panel bridges in urban infrastructure works, combining vehicle access, pedestrian movement and the routing of essential cable services within one temporary crossing solution.
