Maintaining pedestrian and cycle access during rehabilitation of the existing bridge
The renovation of the L59 overpass across the A14 motorway in Götzis-Koblach, Austria, required a temporary crossing to maintain safe access for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the construction period.
As part of the project, a temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge was installed north of the existing overpass. This ensured that an important local connection between Götzis and Koblach remained open while the existing road bridge was being renovated.
A robust temporary crossing over the A14
Waagner-Biro supplied a 42.7 m long panel bridge, providing a 3.15 m clear width for pedestrian and cycle traffic.
The bridge was equipped with standard steel deck elements featuring a non-slip epoxy coating, as well as protective railings and mesh fencing on both sides. Designed in accordance with DIN EN 1991-2 and DIN EN 1991-2/NA, the bridge accommodated pedestrian and cycle loads of 5.0 kN/m².
The generous clear width allowed pedestrians and cyclists to pass each other comfortably, while the railings and fencing provided adequate safety.
Installation during an overnight motorway closure
The main challenge was the installation of the temporary bridge across the busy A14 motorway. To ensure safe working conditions, the motorway was closed overnight from 1 to 2 April 2026.
The panel bridge was pre-assembled and then lifted into its final position using two large telescopic cranes. Thanks to the carefully coordinated night-time installation, the work could be carried out efficiently while keeping disruption to motorway traffic to a minimum.
Safe and efficient access throughout the construction period
The temporary panel bridge provided a reliable and convenient crossing for pedestrians and cyclists while the existing L59 overpass is being renovated. It maintained local accessibility and separated vulnerable road users from the construction activities and motorway traffic below.
